Q: “I am an artist, and I need help storing and organizing my life — and my arts and crafts supplies. And do you have any other organizational advice for creative types?”

A: As far as I know, there are no scientific studies on the correlation between ADHD and creativity. From my own experience, however, I have to think they are related. Many of the adults with ADHD I know are also talented artists. Crafters and artists have extra challenges staying organized, because they gather items as both materials and inspiration for their art.

If possible, separate your crafting items and their storage from the rest of the house, in a crafting room or corner. Keep your supplies where you can comfortably pursue your craft without having to clean up for dinner or bill-paying. This will keep your materials handy and your home neat.

You didn’t mention the specific items you use and need to store, but let’s just say that size matters. If you are doing large canvases and you live in an apartment, you would do best by renting studio space or switching mediums to sketching (sketch books are easily stored in small spaces). Many communities have cooperative shared spaces for artists at reasonable prices, so if space is tight, move large projects off-site and keep small projects, like beadwork, in your home.
