Hey, Dads:
Does your son with ADHD often…

  • …lose things or forget things he needs?
  • …not know how to speed up when you’re in a rush?
  • …not seem to remember how to do things he’s done before?

Here’s the deal: These are all a result of his lagging executive function skills. If your son has ADHD, he has an “executive function developmental delay.” This is proven by science.

You cannot punish somebody into developing better executive function skills. Giving them consequences for things they forgot, or things they missed, or for making you late does not help them develop better executive function skills. The way he is going to imporove his executive functioning is by implementing simple strategies that work and by being really positive and encouraging because getting frustrated and angry is not going to help…”
